If you’re feeling tired, tense, or just not quite right—magnesium deficiency could be the hidden culprit. Despite being one of the most important minerals in the body, up to 70% of Americans are not getting enough magnesium. At Zia IV Hydration & Wellness, we’re passionate about helping our patients restore optimal health from the inside out—and that includes making sure you’re getting enough of this vital nutrient.
We even include magnesium in many of our IV therapy blends, because of how important and fast-acting it can be when delivered directly into the bloodstream.
Why Magnesium Matters
Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body. It plays a role in:
- Muscle relaxation and nerve function
- Sleep quality and stress response
- Blood sugar balance and insulin sensitivity
- Bone health
- Migraines and PMS symptoms
- Heart rhythm and blood pressure regulation
Symptoms of magnesium deficiency can include:
- Muscle cramps or twitching
- Anxiety or irritability
- Constipation
- Fatigue or brain fog
- Poor sleep
- Irregular heartbeat
Because magnesium is depleted by stress, alcohol, caffeine, sugar, medications (like diuretics and PPIs), and even sweating—it’s easy to fall short, even with a “healthy” lifestyle.
Different Types of Magnesium (And When to Use Them)
Not all magnesium supplements are created equal. Here are some of the most common forms:
1. Magnesium Glycinate
- Gentle on the stomach
- Great for anxiety, sleep, and muscle tension
- One of the best-absorbed forms
✅ This is our favorite for daily use
2. Magnesium Citrate
- Helpful for constipation
- Can cause loose stools in higher doses
- Decent absorption
3. Magnesium Malate
- Supports energy production and muscle recovery
- Often used for fatigue and fibromyalgia
4. Magnesium Threonate
- Crosses the blood-brain barrier
- Best for cognitive support and memory
5. Magnesium Oxide
- Poorly absorbed
- Mostly used as a laxative
❌ Not ideal for addressing deficiency
6. Magnesium Sulfate
- Found in Epsom salts for soaking
- Also used in IV therapies for rapid effect
Magnesium in Our IV Therapies
At Zia, we include magnesium sulfate in several of our popular IV blends:
- Myers Cocktail
- Immune Boost
- Migraine and Muscle Recovery Drips
When given through an IV, magnesium bypasses the digestive tract and goes straight into your cells, providing faster relief for symptoms like:
- Headaches
- Cramps
- Fatigue
- Stress and tension
Who Should Not Supplement With Magnesium?
While magnesium is safe for most people, there are a few exceptions:
- Kidney disease: People with significantly impaired kidney function should avoid high-dose magnesium, as their body may not clear it properly.
- Severe heart block (without a pacemaker): High doses could affect heart rhythm.
- Medications that interact: Magnesium can interfere with certain antibiotics and thyroid medications. Always take them at least 2 hours apart.
Always consult with your provider before starting a new supplement—especially if you’re on prescription medications or have underlying conditions.
